A CROWD funding project has been launched by the Koala Action Group to save Toondah koalas.
Money from the project will be used to buy GPS tracking devices to help determine the number of koalas in the Toondah Harbour area.
KAG spokeswoman Debbie Pointing said her group would use Endeavour Veterinary Ecology to oversee the project.
“KAG will provide support with locating and monitoring of koalas,’’ she said.
“The project will run for up to 12 months and up to six koalas will be collared and tracked, depending on how much money is raised.’’
“On Saturday, August 6, KAG will conduct a koala walk in Cleveland to locate some of the koalas that will be tracked as part of the project and we’re inviting community members to join us in the search.
“We’re meeting at GJ Walter Park in Cleveland at 1.30pm and will finish up at 4pm with afternoon tea in the park.’’
It is hoped to raise $40,000 in the crowd funding and the collars will be used as part of a study during the upcoming breeding season.
Koala numbers have crashed in the Redlands over the past 20 years, with 80 per cent lost, according to a state government report. A major part of the issue appears to be development of prime coastal habitat in areas like Toondah Harbour.
The precinct faces further development pressure and clearing, with the proposed $1.3 billion harbour expansion which includes a ferry and tourism precinct, marina, residential and retails areas.
