AN 83-YEAR-OLD grandmother avoided being carjacked in Cleveland after two people jumped into her car demanding to be taken to Capalaba.
Her response and quick police work saw two people charged in connection with the incident within half an hour.
The woman, who asked not to be named, was waiting to turn out of a car park into Shore Street West on Tuesday when two people leaped into her car.
“The fellow was in the front and the girl in the back,” she said.
The grandmother asked what they were doing and the man demanded she drive them to Capalaba.
“He said ‘go to Capalaba’ and I said ‘I am not going to Capalaba’, the woman told the Bulletin.
“He got quite stroppy and demanding, saying ‘Capalaba, Capalaba’.
“Then it kicked in and I thought I had better jump out,” she said.
The grandmother took her keys out the ignition, but then she decided to press the horn.
“I kept the horn going hoping to get attention from someone,” she said.
“They took off like a rocket, but the man grabbed my handbag as he got out the car. That really annoyed me.”
The grandmother said a motorist who had seen the incident asked if she was able to drive and suggested she go to the Cleveland police station.
A quick response by the police using descriptions the woman provided saw two people arrested on the Cleveland train station platform within half an hour.
The woman’s handbag was returned to her.
The relieved grandmother said she could not praise the police enough for being kind and considerate and wanted to thank the motorist who suggested she go to the police.
“I also want to remind people to please lock their doors when driving,” she said.
A 51-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman, both of Alexandra Hills, have appeared in Cleveland Magistrates Court on one charge each of enter premises and commit an indictable offence.
