YEAR 5 student Harriet Knijff is too young to join the Lions Club, but has been so helpful to the club that she has been given a service award.
The Faith Lutheran College student was given a certificate of appreciation when she was invited to attend a Lions Club of Redland Bay – Victoria Point dinner recently.
Harriet’s grandmother Alison Ferguson, a member of the club for many years, said her granddaughter had become known as Queen of the Raffle Tickets.
“It was wonderful when the club said they would give her the award because it is a way of encouraging community service,” she said.
She said Harriet loved helping elderly people and was always looking for ways to be of service to others.
For the Lions Club, Harriet has helped at the monthly Redland Bay markets, getting up at 5am to set up the club’s stall.
She has also been involved in the club’s Christmas wrapping service, sausage sizzles and the raffle sales.
“They saw how good I was at selling raffle tickets and just wanted me to come back again and again,” she said.
The club is raising money for their nominated beneficiary the Childhood Cancer Foundation and a local family struggling due to a devastating medical situation.
Harriet said she enjoyed helping the Lions Club and knowing the money she raised would go to people in need.
“I just want to help people,” she said.
Harriet wants to join a Leo Club when she gets to high school.
