Residents from Alexandra Hills, Redland Bay and Wellington Point who received their flu shots have contributed $616 towards a fund raising total of $22,000 by Discount Drug Stores for its vaccination health clinics overseas.
Every flu shot received contributes $2 towards the vaccination, medical care, protection and education of disadvantaged children in Kolkata, India under its Get a Shot, Give a Chance program.
Up 500 people from last year’s flu vaccination clinics, Discount Drug Stores administered over 7,500 shots with each $2 raised for children to protect them against Hepatitis B, Typhoid and Tetanus.
Discount Drug Stores’ National Professional Services Manager Stephenie Shea said the success of the program was due to the generous support from the local community.
“Two thirds of children in India do not have access to life-saving vaccinations to protect themselves against preventable diseases such as Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Typhoid, Chickenpox and Tetanus, which are all highly rampant in India.
“It’s great to see the amazing community involvement continue to grow and contribute to raising much needed funds in ensuring children in India are protected and given healthier futures, free from disease.
“We are so grateful to the community for their increasing support as it has not only created amazing positive healthcare change in our own backyard but also in disadvantaged communities in India,” she said.
Discount Drug Stores has worked with FreeToBe since 2010, and runs an annual FreeToBe month every May to help the not-for-profit organisation raise funds for children who have been rescued from devastating circumstances such as child labour, abuse and exploitation, and vulnerability.
