Cleveland Uniting Church will celebrate its 40th anniversary of Day Camp at 36 Passage Street from 3pm to 5pm on Sunday, September 4.
The celebration will be a chance for people to see some of activities undertaken at Day Camp. Enrolments for this year’s camp will be taken that day or at the church office, Cleveland Uniting Church, 36 Passage Street from 9am to 1pm Monday to Friday.
Each year, Day Camp runs in the September school holidays for a full week of fun and activities within a Christian environment for children in primary school. It is organised and run by the Redland Uniting Churches, involving Trinity at Wellington Point, Cleveland, Victoria Point and Redland Bay.
Each day the children are picked up by bus from a nominated Uniting Church in the Redlands and transported to the camp site. After a full day of activities, they are brought back in the afternoon. This year the camp will be held at Karingal Scout Campsite, Mt Cotton.
Day Camp gives children the camping experience during the day but they return to the comfort of their own beds at night. Day Camp is a learning and adventure program run over five days. The campers can participate in adventure games, singing and craft activities, gunyah making, challenge activities and sports. There is a flying fox, low ropes, archery, billy boiling, orienteering and damper making.
All of the campers, and the majority of leaders are broken up into teams for the week. Each team will typically have one leader (Year 12 or above), one helper (Year 9-11) and around six campers who have been grouped by age and gender.
“Each team will have a gunyah which is basically a bush cubby house or base where they leave their belongings and can decorate throughout the week. Not only do we have leaders who were once campers attending Day Camp themselves, but many are also returning with their own children,” Media Liaison officer for the Cleveland Uniting Church Lynette Hardman said.
This year’s camp will run from September 26 to 30 at Karingal Scout campsite, Mount Cotton. The Open Day at Karingal is on Wednesday, September 28 which provides to witness activities at the camp.
The current Day Camp coordinator is Rev. Stephen Rothery, Youth and Families Minister at Cleveland Uniting Church. Enquiries to 0411 714 201.
