REDLANDS locals are going a little troppo to support cancer sufferers.
The Redlands Cancer Council Volunteer Branch is gearing up for its annual Girls’ Lunch In charity bash.
Members want locals to dig out their best beach fashion and get tropical for the day on Wednesday, October 19 at Wellington Point Hall (Birkdale Road) from 11am.
Good food is guaranteed. Tish Henderson of Cleveland has been a branch member since 2003 and has a reputation as a pretty good cook for events.
Friend Carol Underwood of Cleveland said she had been a member for about seven years. “Tish is a fantastic cook,’’ she said. “She’s always supplying really good food.’’
Branch member Heather Schroder said the event would include a fashion parade by Bellabeachie, live entertainment by Vinyl Frenzy Duo, lucky ticket prizes, raffles and a delicious meal.
“This year our theme is tropical fiesta – it’s going to be another fantastic event in support of an important cause,” Ms Schroder said.
“As a branch we’re very motivated to host events and do what we can. I’ve been a part of the branch for more than 28 years and still enjoy every moment.’’
Tickets to the lunch are $30 per person and bookings are essential. Phone Heather on 3286 1803 or Tish on 0407 587 096.
In Brisbane alone, more than 1600 women will be diagnosed with breast or gynaecological cancer this year, and about 300 will die from these cancers.
Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said those Queenslanders who hosted a Girls’ Night In made a big difference.
“Women have never needed an excuse to get together but if ever there was one – this is it,” Ms Clift said.
“Girls’ events can be as big or small as you would like – simply spend a night in with your girlfriends and donate what you would have spent on a night out to Cancer Council Queensland.
“Whether you host a pyjama party, pot luck dinner, movie night, clothes swap or a pamper party – your support will make a tangible difference to those affected by women’s cancers.”
About 3000 Queensland women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually and about 1000 with an ovarian, cervical, vaginal, vulva or uterine cancer.
Cancer Council aims to raise $1.4 million through the events.
All funds raised will be invested in research, patient support services and prevention programs for women affected by breast and gynaecological cancers.
