Coolnwynpin State School staff and pupils had a rude surprise when returning to school after the holidays, with vandals causing about $40,000 worth of damage to the Education Department facility.
Some of the damage is so bad that part of the school cannot be used until extensive repairs are completed.
Vandals threw paint across rooms and left taps running to flood a building.
School staff, builders and cleaners worked all Monday to make sure the school was in good enough condition for students to return for the start of term 4 on Tuesday.
Wynnum child protection and investigation unit officers said the school on Telaska Court was broken into between 6pm on Friday and 4pm on Sunday.
“Initial investigations suggest a number of people have entered the Before and After School Care building and thrown food around the room including milk, custard and eggs,’’ a spokesman said.
“Paint has then been poured over tables, printers, furniture, walls and ceilings inside the building as well as over the exterior walls.
“Taps have also been turned on inside causing the room to flood.’’
The damage is so significant repairs will need to be completed before it can be used again.
Alternative arrangements have been made for before and after school care students.
Three other school buildings had windows damaged and broken and two iPads and a phone were stolen.
At least $40,000 worth of damage has been done to the school.
A forensic examination of the facility has been completed and police have taken a number of fingerprints.
Anyone with information should contact local police or Crime Stoppers.
