ONLY twice in the history of the Bathurst 1000 since safety cars were introduced have the full 161 laps been run without it being deployed, but it took 92 laps for it to appear on Sunday.
In 1989 and 1991 no safety car was required, while last year there were four periods which encompassed a total of 10 laps.
It was Team BOC driver Andrew Jones who struck trouble on Sunday, making heavy contact with the right hand wall at Reid Park.
Fortunately he was able to walk away from the incident, but it was race over for the #8 Commodore he shared with Jason Bright.
“It was disappointing, but we were unlucky early on with the gear position sensor failing and we went a lap down with that one,” Bright said.
“But it was good to see Andy get out, that’s the main thing. It was a bit scary there when he didn’t get out. We’ll fight on.”
