STUDENTS from Carmel College have collected several accolades at the second annual Positive Mindset Creative Arts Festival.
The school won in the dance category for their performance Anxiety, students Paris Julian and Matthew Petralia were winners for media art and Georgie Taylor won the music category.
Sixteen schools participated in the festival held during Mental Health Week at Logan’s Entertainment Centre.
Carmel College’s arts program leader Julia Spargo said the school was delighted with the achievements of their students.
“We recognise the importance of the arts to help foster creativity, form strong connections, as well as raise awareness of the issues surrounding mental health in young people,” she said.
Georgie sang an original song Lost at Sea while accompanying herself on a ukulele.
She wrote the score and the lyrics, which tell the story of a young girl struggling to find her way in the world, coping with feelings of self-doubt and emotional turmoil.
Addiction and mental health services executive director Professor David Crompton said the event was hugely successful in showcasing young talent and in opening up a dialogue between young people and their community about mental health and addiction issues.
“Many of the performances contained very powerful and thought-provoking messages around mental health and addiction issues faced by young people today,” he said.
