An impressive exhibition of paintings has opened at Redland Art Gallery, with the 50 works shortlisted for the Redland Art Awards 2016 on show until November 27.
First prize was awarded to Sydney artist Pollyxenia Joannou for her work Duplicity, a sophisticated artwork featuring synthetic polymer paint on felt. Part of an ongoing serial narrative, which draws on notions of a migratory history, incorporates personal memory and the experience of duality between two cultures.
Two Brisbane artists won the other major awards, with Monica Rohan awarded second prize for her oil painting Head up shoulders back, and Carol McGregor winning the Local Environment prize for Black seeds, which features possum skins, cotton, ochre, ash and resin.
This year’s awards were judged by José Da Silva (Curatorial Manager, Australian Cinémathèque Collections & Exhibitions, Queensland Art Gallery │ Gallery of Modern Art), Judy Watson (renowned Queensland Indigenous artist), Emma Bain (Director, Exhibitions & Programs, Redland Art Gallery) and Stephanie Lindquist (Director, Collections & Public Art, Redland Art Gallery).
Duplicity has been acquired by Redland Art Gallery as part of the biennial awards, joining Anatye (Bush potato) by acclaimed indigenous artist Margaret Loy Pula, spectacular synthetic polymer paint on linen artwork that won the 2014 awards and is on display in the foyer of the ground floor of the council’s administration building.
