REDLANDS MP Matt McEachan is encouraging kids to get involved in cleaning up their environment by starting a recycling initiative for Redlands' schools.
The program, called Recycle for Redlands, aims to raise awareness for primary-school aged kids about the impact of litter, while earning money for their school.
“I wanted to develop a program that would encourage kids to clean up our environment and beautiful Moreton Bay,” Mr McEachan said.
“They simply have to collect or pick up containers and bottles and pop them in the bins donated by JJ Richards especially for our program.
“It’s great to work with local business JJ Richards who are already great promoters of recycling in the Redlands."
Schools will earn 10c for each container collected and receive a donation of the total amount following the collection of the containers at the end of the Recycle for Redlands program.
The school that collects the most containers will win an overall prize of $1000.
Mr McEachan developed the program after the LNPs announcement that, if elected, it would introduce an innovative container deposit scheme to address one of Queensland’s biggest environmental issues.
The scheme would bring Queensland into line with other states and hopefully cut container litter by 60 per cent.
Mr McEachan sais that in states where a container deposit scheme had been introduced, more than 80 per cent of consumers returned their containers rather than throwing them out.
