QUEENSLANDERS involved in all facets of Relay for Life are being asked to put aside 30 minutes of their day to take part in a research project to help benefit volunteers.
Anybody who has participated or volunteered at a Cancer Council Relay For Life event in Queensland from 2015 to 2017 can take part in the study.
This includes all relayers, team captains, survivors, carers, committee members, or anybody else providing assistance on a volunteer basis.
The survey is a collaborative project between Griffith University, Cancer Council Queensland, the American Cancer Society, the Union for International Cancer Control, and Volunteering Queensland, with funding from the Australian Research Council.
Project manager Dr Melissa Legg said the survey is to help further understand why people take part in Relay for Life, what they enjoy about the event and how the Cancer Council can continue to attract new volunteers or support other volunteers from the community.
“The survey will take around 30 minutes and can be completed at relaysurvey.org,” she said.
“We then email participants to invite them to complete a follow-up survey in six, 12, 18 and 24 months.”
Dr Legg said this follow-up period was vital to understanding satisfaction and patterns of participation over time.
“The survey will provide us with key insights into how we can support our Cancer Council Relay For Life volunteers so they continue their vital contribution to this event year after year,” she said.

“In each survey we will ask questions about background, attitude and opinions in relation to Cancer Council’s Relay For Life, past experiences with this event, and intention to be involved with this event in the future.”
In order to maintain the high-quality standard of this research the team hope to recruit at least 2000 participants by the end of 2017.
“So far we have recruited approximately 350 participants,” Dr Legg said.
