ABOUT 500 Redlanders, most of them little, gathered in Library Square on Friday night as the Redlands brand new Christmas tree was lit up for the first time.
Santa arrived right on time with his reindeer, complete with sleigh.
Mayor Karen Williams said that while the origin of the traditional Christmas tree was in the winter snows of the northern hemisphere, it still offered a powerful message at Redlands.
“For everyone who sees our tree, I hope that it makes them reflect on all the good things we have, makes them proud of what they have achieved and offers them an expectation of even better things to come,’’ Cr Williams said.
“As a city, we began displaying our big outdoor Christmas tree in 2002 and I hope people see our new tree as a reflection of our community spirit and a beacon of hope offering reassurance that we will soon be embracing a new year.”
As part of official proceedings, the new Christmas tree received a blessing from Quandamooka Elder Aunty Joan Hendriks.
Delighted children donned Christmas antlers and had the chance to meet Santa and his reindeer and write letters to Santa while listening to carols performed by Redland City Choir.
The crowd joined in the official countdown and cheered as the tree lit up in a burst of dazzling Christmas lights.
The Redland Christmas Tree is at Cleveland Library Square, Middle Street and will remain on display until Tuesday 10 January 2017.
The tree will be lit from 6.30pm to 10.30pm every night until after Christmas.
A council spokesperson said the tree would have security surveillance.
