Queensland weather: severe thunderstorms tracking east

QAS Gold Coast operations supervisor Gavin Fuller said paramedics responded to three reported lightning strikes to homes.

In Miami, paramedics were called to a unit on Snipe Street following reports a woman was experiencing "minor symptoms", and four people were treated at the scene.

Mr Fuller said the people were shaken, but otherwise OK.

"There were people, residents of that unit that were nearby, and were obviously quite shocked when this has occurred however they were all uninjured," he said.

Mr Fuller said it appears lightning struck the roof of the unit.

"That lightning has travelled through the roof, through the eaves, onto a metal fence and down into the cement, and has blown quite a large hole in the cement," he said.

In Tallai, a boy has been taken to hospital with burns, after lightning struck the home or close to the home where he was reportedly touching a tap.

"He's received some minor burns to his hands and possibly someone said to his back, but he's been transported to Robina Hospital in quite a stable condition," Mr Fuller said.

Mr Fuller said people should "seek cover away from metal objects".

"Obviously don't go out in the rain with an umbrella and try to take photos of the lightning," he said.

"So get under shelter somewhere would be the safest place."

The severe thunderstorms continue to track northeast across south-east Queensland coastline. The storms were detected near Rathdowney, Miami and the waters off Tweed Heads just after 4.30pm and were moving northeast.

Residents have been warned to expect damaging winds, heavy rainfall and large hailstones.

Southport, Conondale, Kenilworth, Numinbah Valley and Stradbroke Island are expected to be hit by just after 5.30pm.

A Bureau of Meteorology spokesman said there was the potential for Brisbane to be hit in the coming hours.

There is also a general severe thunderstorm warning for the south-east coast and parts of the Wide Bay, Burnett, Darling Downs and Granite Belt districts.
