WATCHING a kitchen fire and crash rescue demonstration are on the cards for an open day at Coochiemudlo Island Fire Station on Saturday, January 21.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Services iZone officer Graham Wells said the kitchen fire simulation was a demonstration of a pot of oil catching alight on a stove.
“We demonstrate ways of putting the fire out; what to do and what not to do,” Mr Wells said.
This included showing what happened if water was poured on the fire and how to use a fire blanket.
During a road crash rescue scenario, auxiliary firefighters will demonstrate the hydraulic equipment they use.
Queensland Ambulance Service first responders from the island and SES volunteers will assist in the simulated rescue and Redland City Council’s disaster management staff will attend the event.
Emergency services personnel will also provide information about smoke alarms, being prepared for bushfires and storms, and general first aid safety.
Mr Wells said similar events and demonstrations would be held elsewhere in the Redlands later in the year.
Anyone from Coochiemudlo Island, other islands or the mainland is invited to attend.
The open day will go from about 11am until 2pm.
It will be held at the fire station, a short walk from the jetty, and a free sausage sizzle will be provided by QFES.
