PLANS for a petrol station, drive-through cafe and shops at the intersection of Cleveland-Redland Bay Road and Boundary Street, Redland Bay, have drawn the ire of a resident who is concerned traffic congestion may increase if the development is approved.
Lawrence Watson, who has lived in the area for the past nine years, said the proposed development at 75 Boundary Street was likely to increase already lengthy travel time to Victoria Point.
Mr Watson said, due to heavy traffic congestion, he avoided driving westbound along Boundary Street during school pick-up and drop-off times to instead take a 2.5km detour via Main Street.
He said he does this to avoid the high volume of traffic turning right onto Gordon Road at the signalised intersection, which he said could be backed up more than .5km.
“The proposal can only add to that existing serious congestion and pose a danger to vehicles, drivers, passengers and pedestrians,” Mr Watson said.
A Redland City Council spokesman said the application, including its potential traffic impacts, was still being assessed, with public comments able to be made until February 6.
“Council referred the application to the Department of Infrastructure and Planning (DILPG) who has requested further traffic information from the applicant to determine impacts,” he said.
“The application is still in the public notification stage and a decision will not be made until this stage has been completed.”
Redland City Bulletin has attempted to contact the prospective developers for comment, but at the time of going to press, a response had not been received.
