THE Macleay Island foreshore will soon get a makeover, with council advertising for tenders for the multi million job.
The tender calls for civil and marine engineering to build a seawall and car park, road works and ancillary marine infrastructure, a beach and two-lane recreational boat ramp and access stairs.
The redevelopment is one of the largest single infrastructure projects planned for Redland City.
Mayor Karen Williams said the estimated $6 million project represented part of a substantial investment in the Southern Moreton Bay Island communities.
“The community has been calling for this project for a number of years and the advertising of this tender signifies a major step towards its delivery,” she said.
“This project has been a particular challenge with significant project design hurdles to overcome over several years, including negotiation and planning approval involving the state government and separate marine authorities and utility providers, in order to reach this important stage.
“Subject to a successful tender process with tenders closing on 2 March, we anticipate work could start as early as this financial year.’’
“The work will provide substantial long term improvements to island parking issues, seal asbestos contamination on the foreshore and provide recreational boat access improvements.”
Cr Mark Edwards said the project would help boost island economies and fitted well with state and council planning towards upgrades of ageing island jetties.
“The momentum of these investments will make a strong contribution to the appeal of the islands for business and jobs as well as unique places to live,’’ he said.
A draft outline of foreshore work is available on council’s website.
