Redlands Tigers produced a mixed-bag of results on the opening day of the second last round of the Queensland Premier Competition, but will be pressing hard for victory next weekend as the battle for a place in the finals heats up.
First grade have set Sunshine Coast a target of 258 for victory following a stellar display of batting from Nick Hurford, who put on 89 runs in 94 deliveries. Michael Herdman provided able support with his innings of 55, which included four sixes, while Liam Smith and Josh Henderson also chipped in with 25 runs each. Sunshine Coast are none for 46 heading into day two, with Redlands requiring ten wickets to clinch victory.
Second Grade, who are also taking on the Sunshine Coast, have bowled the opposition out for 298 away from home, setting up an epic final day run chase. Spinner Charles Mailli took 5 for 58 in combination with Lenny Watt, who claimed two wickets, to restrict the opposition to a very gettable total. The reigns will be handed over to the Tigers batsman to score the required runs for victory next weekend and back up their excellent effort in the field.
Third Grade finished a difficult day with the bat by taking three wickets during the last ten overs of play in their clash with University at home on Fred Kratzman oval last Saturday. Jaime Stuart top scored with 45, while Trent Conwell and Adam Person also made valuable scores of 39 and 31 respectively, to see the Tigers through to a total of 191 in their first innings and set up an intriguing final days play. Redlands require a further seven wickets on top of the three already shared by Jamie Stuart and Luke Haegel to win the game.
The derby between the two Redlands Fourth Grade sides, which took place on Peter Burge Oval on Sunday afternoon, hangs in the balance after the first day's play. Lance Parsons scored 31 runs and Jordan Crick 30 in Four One's first innings total which currently stands at 8 for 163 heading into day two. Josh Fraser bowled well throughout the day to claim four wickets for Four Two's, while Matt Wheeler capped off a fantastic opening spell with three. This game already has the makings of an absolute thriller.
Fifth Grade bowled Western Suburbs (2) out for 206 with Uwan Porage claiming four wickets and Pearce Anderson three. Ben Lockwood bowled well to finish the day with figures of 2 for 42. The Tigers are 2 for 2 in reply but still have their full complement of batsman to come and eight wickets in hand to chase down West's first innings total and secure a victory.
Sixth Grade no 1 bowled University out for just 103 thanks to some superb bowling from the Redlands' bowlers. Prakash Hewavitharana finished with the impressive figures of 4 for 9, while James Cullen and Patrick McKerr took two wickets each to ensure the Tigers batsman would be chasing a small total for first innings points. Redlands will resume day two having already put on 46 runs for the loss of two wickets and will be relying on their middle order to post a big first innings score to set up the opportunity for an outright victory.
Sixth Grade no 2 posted 126 runs in their clash with Northern Suburbs but unfortunately that was not enough runs as the opposition finished the day on 4 for 162, 36 runs ahead of the Tigers first innings total. Prashanthon Nagaraja top scored with 31 while Captain James Read batted well for his 27 runs. The Redlands bowling attack was highlighted by Sean Lloyd who took all four of North’s wickets, to finish the day with figures of 4 for 62 from fifteen straight overs. Redlands will be hoping to dismiss Norths early next weekend and give themselves the chance to push for an outright win.
