Prawns continue to be on the menu, in the last few days the southern Bay has been the hot spot. Deeper holes off the south eastern side of Russell Island and further north around Lamb and Karragarra islands have produced good catches but you need to use your sounder and look for them, there are some big schools moving around.
Mud crabs were a bit slower this week but still worth putting your pots out, and there were sandies caught along North Straddie in the southern Bay.
Still plenty of whiting around, top spots were the Nerang River up above the Council Chambers, Ageston Sand in the Logan and Kedron Brook Floodway turned up some quality this week, several land based anglers using bloodworms reported good catches.
There’s been plenty of mangrove jack around, most have come from snaggy areas at the Pin and canal rock walls on the Gold Coast.
Flathead are worth targeting but trolling is still more productive than casting so you cover more ground - they are not schooled up.
There quite a few smaller mulloway reported from the Seaway, live herring, small mullet or a string of banana prawns have been the best baits.
There’s choppers in the surf through the night and a few in the early mornings as well as plenty of dart north of Brisbane, northern NSW have not had many dart.
In Moreton Bay there’s been longtail tuna off Bribie and mackerel around the beacons down the western side.
The artificial reefs have turned up a lot of small stuff, very few keepers.
Top spot in the Bay this week was Western Rocks with snapper to a few kilos, cod and a few mackerel caught.
Offshore, the current backed off a little in some areas this week.
Many anglers are trolling for pelagic species with a few spotties, Spanish and the odd bigger fish including wahoo and marlin caught.
There’s still a few pearlies in the deeper water and for those live baiting kingfish and quite a few cobia in shallow on the bait grounds.
In the freshwater, catches improved a little but we need soaking to fire things up.
Bass are still schooled up, you need to sound around to find the schools.
Trolling the edges will produce the odd fish, especially just on dark.
