VICTORIA Point High School has its very own sister act with the Rota girls stepping into student leadership positions.
Brooklyn, 16, and her younger sister Brieane, 14, have been selected as senior and junior school captains for this year.
While sibling achievement can sometimes lead to rivalry, the Rota household has experienced none of this - only joy.
The pair agreed both their mum Sarah and dad Jeremy were equally delighted with the two of them.
“Our parents were very proud,” Brooklyn said.
The duo were sworn in last Monday and will help engage the student community alongside two other school captains and a team of vice-captains.
Brieane said a top priority for both the senior and junior teams was to boost enthusiasm at the school.
While Brooklyn and Brieane have only begun, they already have plans to improve the schooling experiences of children and teens at the school.
Brooklyn said she had spoken with teachers to introduce a buddy system for those who had trouble reading English.
She said she hoped remedial readers could be partnered with others at the school to help them when needed, with nursing homes visits to read books aloud to seniors something also being investigated.
“We are not really sure what we are going to do exactly, but I think what we want to achieve this year is a sense of belonging at the school where everyone feels they are included,” she said.
The Rota girls helped co-ordinate a Valentine’s Day stall earlier this month and can not wait for upcoming sports carnivals to promote inclusiveness, Brieane said.
While Brooklyn’s speech to qualify her for the role of senior school captain focused on the topic of making every minute count, Brieane’s was about the importance of attitude and effort for academic success.
