LEARNING the secrets to success from Queensland’s best rugby and netball players is all in a day’s work for girls identified as Indigenous at Victoria Point State High School.
Up to 30 students from Years 7 to 12 have been visited by the likes of Scott Prince, Bo de la Cruz and the Firebird’s Jemma Mi Mi for quarterly personal development workshops.
It is all part of the Beyond the Broncos Girls Academy which will continue to be delivered throughout the rest of the year.
Indigenous support worker Aunty Robyn Lucas said the interactive seminars were just one of many incentives at Victoria Point State High School aimed at boosting the retention of students identified as Indigenous.
Not only is regular attendance rewarded, but pride in cultural heritage encouraged.
Aunty Robyn said research had shown a number of issues related to the engagement of Indigenous students in education, with the school’s approach successful in boosting academic outcomes.
While she said only one Indigenous student matriculated in 2004, every Indigenous student in last year’s Year 12 cohort graduated.
About a dozen senior students are also on-track to complete their studies in December.
Aunty Robyn said she was filled with hope for those students identified as Indigenous at the school.
