THE extent of homelessness in Redlands was the catalyst for a Cleveland church to start a mobile food service.
Pastor Ron Favalovo said members of the church would take the street van to areas around the city, initially every Friday evening.
He said homelessness had been a concern to him and many people did not realise the extent of homelessness in the Redlands.
They also intended to go to the skate parks at Thornlands and Victoria Point to provide food to young people.
“The purpose is to provide a gathering place where young people can meet other young people who are working with us,” he said.
Pastor Favalovo said they were providing the service as a church, but not as a religion.
“It is not just a food service, but also a caring service.”
The van was being refitted and would include a barbecue, fridge and boiling water unit.
Pastor Henry de Vries of New Life Fellowship said the church was often asked to provide overnight accommodation or food parcels for people in need.
That assistance would continue, but he believed the timing was right for a mobile service in the Redlands.
“We also have young people who have a passion for this and we’ll support them in it,” he said.
