Congratulations to Redlands Tigers first grade players Sam Heazlett, Jimmy Peirson and Marnus Labuschagne, who were all selected in the Queensland Bulls Sheffield Shield side this week to take on South Australia at the Adelaide Oval.
Wicket-keeper batsman and Redlands first grade captain Peirson, who is making his debut for the Bulls in the absence of long-time glove-man Chris Hartley, top scored with 50 in the first innings to back-up his performances for the Brisbane Heat in the BBL, while Labuschagne and Heazlett continued their recent run of good form to put the Bulls in a strong position going into the final two days.
In the most recent round of two-day matches Redlands won one game and lost six.
First Grade were unable to defend their first innings score on Peter Burge oval, going down to Sunshine Coast who scored 289. The Tigers had the opposition in danger early in the day thanks to some quick wickets, but were unable to sustain the stranglehold as the Sunshine Coast chased down the Tigers’ score for the loss of five wickets. Spinner Ryan LeLoux bowled well to claim two wickets for Redlands.
Second Grade battled hard away from home but came up short in their clash with the Sunshine Coast. Redlands scored 191 in reply to the opposition’s day one total of 290, with Stuart Edgar scoring a fine half century in the Tigers’ chase. Charles Maili also stood up with the bat to supplement his bowling performance by scoring a counter-attacking 33. Lenny Watt was taken to hospital during the day with a suspected heart attack and everyone at Redlands is wishing him well and hoping he makes a speedy recovery. The Tigers will return home this Saturday and will be looking to make amends for this week’s loss with a victory over South Brisbane.
Third Grade took out a thriller against University, bowling the opposition out for 174 in reply to the Tigers’ first innings total of 191. Jamie Stuart took two wickets on the second day, adding to the two he took just before stumps the previous week, to finish with the impressive figures of 4/28, while Josh Thompson also bowled well to claim three crucial wickets. After dismissing University and claiming first innings points, Redlands had the opportunity to bat again and scored 135 for the loss of eight wickets. Scott McAuliffe top scored with 35 while Mitch Drennan chipped in with 30.
Fourth Grade number 2 clinched victory in an epic tussle for the Fourth Grade crown on Peter Burge oval last Sunday. Chasing 156 for victory, Fourth Grade no 2 surpassed Four One's total seven wickets down thanks to a well compiled 62 from Dylan Grey and some late order hitting from Andrew Barrie in his innings of 42. Ravin Wijeyeratne took four wickets to put Four One in with a chance of snatching victory when it looked as if the opposition had the game wrapped up, but it was Four Two who prevailed, scoring 217 before being dismissed. Lance Parsons also made a vital contribution with the ball, taking two wickets at pivotal points in the game.
Fifth Grade, who were defending 206 for victory, were dismissed for 135 in their run chase despite a hard fought 52 from Josh Edwards. Zac Dale and Matt Conwell also made crucial runs in the Tigers’ first innings, scoring 39 and 35 respectively. Redlands had Wests three down for 129 in their second innings before a declaration was made, giving them the opportunity to bat again. The Tigers finished the day four down for 37 with Taylor Cue 17 not out.
Sixth Grade no. 1 scored 210 runs in reply to University's first innings total of 103, handing the Tigers first innings points. Captain Dom Cassell led the way for Redlands with an unbeaten 44, while Jay Kidley (42), James Hutchinson (32) and Raghav Goel (22) also helped the Tigers pile on the runs. University were 5 down for 169 in their second innings when stumps were called after the Tigers declared. Tom Knight was the chief wicket taker with three wickets.
Sixth Grade no. 2 were playing away from home last Saturday and were unfortunately defeated by Northern Suburbs. Redlands dismissed Norths for 217 on day two, leaving them 91 runs to get on top of their first innings total of 126 to avoid an outright loss. The Tigers did just that, scoring 101, with captain James Read playing another vital innings of 25 to add to his first innings effort of 27. Will Read and Jake Franklin also impressed in the second innings with scores of 24 and 23. But that wasn't enough as the opposition scored the required runs for victory five overs into the last innings of the game.
