Rain has improved fishing and opened up a few more options up for anglers.
Mud crabs are on right now, with great catches over the past few days.
The rain has also fired up good catches of mangrove jack and a few estuary cod by those trolling canals walls and river snags.
Over the weekend there were good catches of mulloway around the Seaway and Jumpinpin Bar. Try a string of fresh banana prawns threaded up your line.
Whiting catches in the rivers have been a little slow, but there’s been better numbers in the larger waterways like the Broadwater and Jumpinpin.
There’s also been good numbers of flathead caught but the better numbers have been on the edge of channels leading towards bar entrances.
Unfortunately one casualty for the heavy rain has been prawns. While deeper holes in the rivers are still producing catches, many prawns have been flushed out into the bay and places like Nudgee are starting to fire up.
The rain has also improved the fishing around the bay island shallows before first light. The top bait has been unweighted banana prawns.
There have been some good tailor to 4.5kg caught in the surf but only at night as the moon rises. Dusk and dawn has turned up small choppers.
No surf mulloway were reported this week but the forecast rain will see catches improve.
On the offshore scene most reports have been about pelagic fish including spotties and Spaniards, a few tuna and the odd small black hookup.
Given the big seas we’ve had, when conditions settle we should see the shallow reefs fishing well for snapper and mixed reef species; they always do after big seas and strong winds.
There have been a few mulloway caught from the shallows offshore as well, and catches will improve if we get more rain.
In the freshwater we’re finally we’re seeing some improvement in redclaw catches in Somerset.
Wivenhoe Dam has been a hot spot for them this week, and there have also been good numbers from the Stanley River arm of Somerset Dam.
The western arm at Hinze Dam is fishing well for bass as is North Pine Dam, especially for those using live shrimp.
