Whilst many musicians find it difficult to make a living from their art, Folk/Country Singer-songwriter Pat Drummond from the Blue Mountains NSW has had no trouble clocking up a 35-year career doing what he loves.
Writing and performing songs about real people and places from interviews gathered from tours across Australia, has garnered him a swag of awards and a loyal following.
Fans can see him perform live for Folk Redlands at Indigiscapes, Capalaba from 3pm on Sunday April 2, following blackboard performances from 1pm.
Drummond’s amazing career has seen him pass through several incarnations that have produced a body of original work in many different musical genres. Starting in the folk scene in the 60’s then developing a following in Sydney’s pub scene in the 70’s and 80’s, Drummond became renowned for writing musical mini-operas that included whole sections scripted for and performed by the crowds.
Drummond’s rock opera Skooldaze toured with Cold Chisel and Marcia Hines in 1985/86. He then partnered with John Shumann in a duo format, supporting legendary Australian rock band Redgum on a national tour.
A regular performer in the 90s at folk, bush and country music festivals, Drummond was awarded the prestigious Australian Independent Country Music Entertainer of The Year in 2000. His Song, The Road To Damascus was selected in the finals of 1999 Country Song Of The Year in The Gold Guitars in Tamworth and along with Karen Lynne he won Contemporary Country Song Of The Year in the Tamworth Songwriting Association’s Songwriting awards in 2000.
He was also joint winner of Male Vocal of the Year at the Australian Bush Music Festival 1993 and grand Ffnalist for Album of the Year, Producer of the Year, Heritage Award and Country Song of the Year in the 1994 Tamworth Australasian Country Music Festival.
In 2008, Drummond along with songwriters Tony Williams and Chris O’Leary created a three-piece comedy outfit entitled the BBQ Kings, a show set around three mates who meet up for a barbecue after years apart. This was signed with ABC/Universal records and was a finalist in the 2009 ARIA’s.
