Russia has placed an "18+" classification on the new Power Rangers movie, prompted by the film's inclusion of a gay character.
The film's initial classification of "16+" was changed without an official explanation, following criticism of the film by United Russia party politician Vitaly Milonov.
Milonov, who was elected to the State Duma last year, is a vocal opponent of LGBT rights in Russia.
The new classification means that the film can only be viewed by people over the age of 18 years of age.
The film, a reboot of the successful Power Rangers television franchise, is the story of a group of super-powered teenagers who team up to defeat a villainess named Rita Repulsa.
In the new film, directed by Dean Israelite, the Yellow Ranger, Trini, is gay.
The character, which was not gay in previous iterations of the Power Rangers franchise, is played in the film by actress Becky G.
The upgraded classification follows a similar move over the Disney film Beauty and the Beast, also driven by a campaign backed by Milonov.
Milonov accused Disney, which included a gay "moment" in Beauty and the Beast in which Le Fou (Josh Gad) appears to have feelings for Gaston (Luke Evans), of "overt and shameless propaganda of sin and sexual perversion under the guise of a fairy tale".
At issue is a controversial 2013 law in Russia which describes homosexuality as "non-traditional sexual relations" and prohibits the spreading of "gay propaganda".
As a result Beauty and the Beast received a "16+" classification, which is unusually strict for a Disney film.
