ALEXANDRA Hills State High School student Hayden Goode, 16, has come within a whisker of winning the prestigious Oceania snooker championships.
Goode was one of five players representing Australia earlier this month, with two from Tasmania and two from Victoria.
Each of the test players competed in a six red and full 15 red format, with a best of seven frames in each event.
Local coach Bob Turpin said Goode’s first opponent was the 2016 Oceania champion, Louis Chand of NZ, who later recorded the highest break in the U21 Oceania singles event of 121.
Goode won four frames to two.
His next match was even more convincing, a 4/3 win over Pravil Kant also of NZ.
Australia won the test 7-3.
In the Oceania U21 singles open to all young players from this region, Goode progressed through his half of the draw as the number one player.
Turpin said this was a good effort, considering only the best players from the region competed.
“Sport in all its forms has its ups and downs and Hayden’s run came to an end in the final frame of the quarter final, losing on the black ball in the last frame,’’ Turpin said.
“This talented young sportsman has another five years to play and maybe win this prestigious championship.’’
Goode is a member of the coaching clinic at the Redlands RSL.
Registered coaches give free use of their tables and free coaching to players from 6 to 18 most Sunday mornings form 9am to 11am.
