COMMUNITY organisation Here’s to Life is running a five-week art therapy course, starting in May.
Here’s to Life runs programs, including dancing, singing and drumming workshops, for people, including those with physical or intellectual disability.
Here’s to Life Redlands manager Sue Harvey said feedback from members suggested there were numerous benefits experienced by those who attended the variety of programs.
She said one art therapy workshop attendee, Barbara, had been ill-prepared for the emotions she experienced when she retired after 45 years of nursing.
Barbara said she felt lost, her independence gone and her self-worth wavered.
“Art therapy has given me a safe place to explore these unwanted emotions,” she said.
“It also helped me overcome the challenges I faced to the point where I now feel confident that I can continue as a valued member of the community.”
The next art therapy course is titled A Journey of Exploration Through Mandalas and will be held every Monday from May 22 until June 19.
Ms Harvey said participants would create their own journey of exploration within circle artwork.
“There will be different activities and mediums each week and clients choose their personal intent for each one; such as self-confidence, enrichment or simply enjoyment.”
Ms Harvey said artistic skills were not necessary.
