With hundreds of volunteers on standby to assist when the remnants of ex-Cyclone Debbie lashed the Redlands last week, the Rotary Club of Cleveland is urging local residents to get involved.
Volunteering is the lifeblood of every community and Cleveland Rotary is asking residents to become a volunteer and give back to the Redlands.
The club will hold a volunteer night on Wednesday, May 24 at the Fiction Bar at Raby Bay Harbourside, where the principles of Rotary and the enormous satisfaction derived from volunteering will be showcased.
Rotary is the world’s oldest and largest, and often considered the most respected, service organisation.
Rotarians have a simple humanitarian purpose – to help make the world a better place.
The Rotary movement has 1.2 million members in more than 35,000 clubs across every continent.
The organisation’s motto is: ‘Service Above Self’.
Rotary provides opportunities for people to build friendships among diverse groups of individuals of different ages from a wide range of businesses, professions and trades.
Through the Rotary Club of Cleveland’s multitude of social and assistance programs, the club’s 55 members are extensively involved in the Redland community.
Among a myriad of programs and projects, the club raises funds for many local and overseas causes.
The club is raising funds through its Ribbon of Gold project, where gold coin donations are collected to assist the annual Relay for Life which will be held at Cleveland Showground on April 29 and 30. The relay raises money to help fund research into cancer.
The club has provided hundreds of thousands of dollars to Redland Hospital and is heavily involved in helping year 11 students with driver awareness through its RYDA program.
The club is also providing funds to assist the Bentham Foundation with helping to educate children in Nepal.
Raising funds at barbecues, assisting with the annual triathlon in Cleveland and being on standby when a humanitarian crisis arises anywhere in the world through providing Rotary’s self-sustaining Shelter Boxes also are among the club’s many endeavours.
Cleveland Rotary meets at the Redlands RSL Club each Tuesday at 6pm for 6.30pm start.
An entertaining program with guest speakers is presented each week. Meetings conclude by 8pm.
