Ben Reid insists he is not the answer to Collingwood's forward-half woes, with the one-time swingman adamant he will be staying in defence, ahead of the Anzac Day blockbuster against Essendon.
Reid has been touted as a possible solution to the Magpies' scoring problems, with Nathan Buckley's side averaging just 75 points in the first four rounds.
But their defender Reid, who kicked 25 goals in the 2013 season when he was thrown forward, is adamant he's happy in defence.
"I'll be staying down back, yes," he said after training on Monday.
"It's always nice to kick a goal, but at the same time I'm really enjoying playing down back. I think the group we have down there is gelling really well at the moment and we are defending pretty well as a back six.
"We've got the ball inside 50 enough. If we can connect a bit more, which everyone is talking about, we'll be better off. I think we'll be a lot better this week."
Despite all the history and hype that surrounds the prestigious day in football, the reality of desperately needing a victory has not been lost on anyone at Collingwood.
While their form hasn't been disastrous, losing three games by an average of 16 points, a loss to an out-of-form Essendon would be a major blow for the Magpies.
"We obviously need to get some wins, let's not beat around the bush, we have to win games of footy, that's what we're here for," he told Channel Seven.
Magpies supporters will be buoyed by the debut of star recruit Daniel Wells, who will don the black-and-white stripes for the first time at senior level since making the move from North Melbourne.
While his injection into the Collingwood team has been a hot talking point in the lead-up to the Anzac Day clash, Reid is adamant the team can't afford to rely on one player being the difference.
"No, it's a collective. It's going to be the 22 players who are out there representing Collingwood. He [Wells] is a classy player, there's no doubt about that, and he will add to us, but at the same time the rest of the boys have to pull their weight as well.
"We don't expect him to set the world on fire first-up, but we just hope he can add his class around the stoppages and when he has the ball, more often than not to hit a Collingwood jumper."
Wells, who will play his 244th game and first for the Pies, will be hoping to recreate the kind of form that saw him become one of the best ball-users in the game during his time at Arden Street.
His last game against Essendon, back in 2014, was an elimination final where he was one of the best players on the ground. He collected 28 disposals as the Kangaroos came from 27 points down at half-time to win by 12 points.
Reid has also thrown his support behind the coach, saying Buckley can only do so much and it's the players who must take the majority of responsibility for the results.
A loss would leave the Magpies at 1-4, along with Brisbane, Hawthorn and Carlton and just above Sydney and North Melbourne on 0-5.
"We're fully behind Bucks as a playing group. He's not out there on the ground doing everything, but he's doing a hell of a lot of work at the club and so is everybody else.
"I think it will click pretty soon and when it does, I think we'll be pretty solid."
