ORMISTON College is bringing on the Tony Award-nominated Broadway hit, Bring It On – The Musical.
A cast and crew of more than 70 senior and junior students has been working on the show since November.
Bring It On – The Musical is a high-energy, dynamic production, loosely based on the 2000 film of the same name.
The story embraces the exciting and high-stress world of competitive cheerleading which is a big deal in the US.
In her final stages of schooling before senior, Campbell Davis (Chiara Gay) dreams of becoming the captain of Truman High’s successful cheerleading team and she seeks the support of her friends Kylar (Alena Olds) and Skylar (Aneka Cannon) and her high school sweetheart Steven (Woody Holmes).
Bad news strikes when Campbell is sent to inner city Jackson High, a school that does not have a cheerleading squad.
Leaving her friend, Eva (Maddy Sloan), Campbell transfers to Jackson, with fellow student – and school mascot – Bridget (Madeleine Megg).
The girls encounter a world of hip-hop dancing and individualism, led by the strong willed, queen bees of Jackson – Nautica (Dasha Karavulava), La Cienga (Denika Vitharana) and head of the crew, Danielle (Emily Pearson).
Campbell finds herself on the outer and her dreams of inspiring the Jackson crew to form a cheerleading squad to take part in a national competition shatter.
Desperate for acceptance, Campbell lies to Danielle, suggesting that the winner of the cheerleading nationals obtains college scholarships and this soon wins over the dominant Danielle.
In the meantime, Campbell catches the attention of smooth DJ Randall (Kyle Bryant) and they fall in love.
Danielle and Campbell start to form a squad in the hope of defeating the powerful Truman team at the nationals.
Directed by Anthony Campbell (theatrical director) and Emma Dron (musical director), the show opens on Thursday May 4 and continues with an evening performance on Friday May 5 with two shows on Saturday 6 May.
This is the college’s most contemporary production to date and is a wonderful opportunity for people to see one of the most dynamic musical productions Broadway has produced.
Producer Peta Egan said she was proud to be involved in such an energetic production.
“Talent runs deep at Ormiston College and our students are indeed rising to the challenge of such an epic and popular show,’’ she said.
“They are forming friendships and memories that they will take with them for many years to come.’’
