THE artisans of Coochiemudlo Island came out ahead of Mother’s Day at the island’s Red Rock Café with a special selection of handmade gifts.
Island residents were joined by visitors from as far afield as the Gold Coast and Brisbane who made the short crossing from Victoria Point to Coochie for the event, greeted by the hearty lunches and exquisite art on offer.
Beadweaving sisters Trish and Elyssa Miller of Bay Island Beads provided a beautiful centrepiece to the pop-up event. They were taught traditional crafts from a young age by their mother.
Well-known island fibre artist Jacqui Creswell offered a range of her handmade baskets, joined by artists Narelle Renn and Catherine Bishop; while the heartwarming handmade candles and melts by Sensual Island Aromas did a roaring trade.
The island’s silversmith Richard Moon offered his latest pieces combining sterling silver and semi-precious stones, and his popular copper and sterling-silver gumleaf range.
Coochie Handmade will be doing it all again on Saturday June 24, 11am-3pm at Red Rock Café for winter solstice. Many of the artisans will be exhibiting at the island’s annual art show on the same weekend as Coochie’s biggest day of the year – Flinders Day on Sunday July 23.
