STUDENTS from six primary schools across the Redlands have become hooked on shooting hoops after battling it out on the court last Sunday.
It was all part of the inaugural Bayside Primary School Boys' Basketball Tournament, which was hosted at the Capalaba PCYC on May 21.
Teams from Thornlands, Cleveland, Bayview and Hilliards state schools and children from St Anthony’s Catholic and Sheldon colleges all took part.
Organiser Bianca Stubbs, who teaches at Thornlands State School, said the day’s outstanding success ensured the event would not only be continued annually but opened to primary-aged girls and all secondary students.
“It was such a great day and was really well received,” she said.
“About 20 kids asked afterwards how to sign-up for basketball.”
Ms Stubbs said she organised the event to not only encourage young players to become club members, but also to provide more opportunity for basketball inter-schools competition.
While Sheldon College took out the top score, followed by Hilliard and Thornlands state schools, Ms Stubbs said the atmosphere of friendly rivalry was lightened thanks to visits from Brisbane Bullets players Tom Jervis and Anthony Petrie.
She said she hoped further school interest would mean the competition’s popularity would grow.
