Homer Simpson to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame

Now, 25 years after the airing of 'Homer at the Bat', one of the most-beloved episodes of The Simpsons of all time, the occasion is being marked this weekend with a ceremony at the spiritual home of baseball in Cooperstown, New York.

The episode featured nine major league baseball players hired by Mr Burns to help bring home the championship for the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant's softball team, but famously, it was Homer who won the game for the Isotopes, being hit in the head by a pitch to force home the winning run.

Wade Boggs and Ozzie Smith, two of the 'ringers' who play for the team in the episode, will join the episode's executive producers Al Jean and Mike Reiss, director Jim Reardon, executive story editor Jeff Martin, and casting director Bonnie Pietila for a roundtable discussion, before a ribbon cutting ceremony on a Simpsons exhibit inside the Hall of Fame, complete with a signed script and VHS of the episode.

First airing in February 1992, it was the first episode of The Simpsons to beat a new episode of The Cosby Show in the ratings.

Boggs and Smith are two of the three players who appeared in the episode who have been enshrined in the Hall of Fame themselves. The other, Ken Griffey Jr., was elected last year with a record number of votes.

'Homer at the Bat' was part of the show's third season, with The Simpsons still churning out new episodes today. Season 29 will air later this year.
