Margaret Court's own arena comes out for 'inclusion'

Margaret Court Arena, part of the Melbourne Parks complex, lobbed into the fray, on Friday saying they remain committed to "equality, diversity and inclusion".

Court, the 74 year-old founder of Victory Life Church in Perth, announced in the West Australian on Thursday that she would stop using Qantas "where possible" in protest at the airline's promotion of same-sex marriage.

"Your statement leaves me no option but to use other airlines [where] possible for my extensive travelling," she said.

Marriage equality activists say it is now up to Court whether she is happy for her name to remain on a building which has stated it supports same-sex equality.

"Margaret Court is entitled to express her views on marriage equality, as are people who believe these views are damaging and outdated.

"We welcome confirmation overnight that both Tennis Australia and Melbourne and Olympic Parks that manage the arena support equality," a spokesman for marriage equality group Just.equal said.

"If Margaret Court is serious about boycotting businesses that support equality, she has a decision to make about whether she wants her name to remain on a building that stands for equality, diversity and inclusion. The ball is in her court."

Fairfax Media has sought comment from Court on this issue.

Support is swelling to change the name with prominent tennis identities joining the debate.

Retired nine-time Wimbledon winner Martina Navratilova delivered a carefully aimed jibe towards Court on Twitter, supporting the name change campaign.

Current Australian player Casey Dellacqua has also taken a stand against Court, after her family with partner Amanda Judd, the other mother of her two children, was targeted for criticism by the tennis great.

"Margaret. Enough is enough," Dellacqua tweeted on Friday, posting a photo of a letter to the editor of The West Australian newspaper from 2013.

"It is with sadness that I see that this baby has seemingly been deprived of a father," Court wrote at the time.

American singer Ryan Adams, who is performing at the Arena tonight, has also weighed in on Twitter, in support of same sex marriage, and pre-nuptial agreements.

However, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said he did not support calls to change the name of the venue.

"Whatever people may think about Margaret Court's views about gay marriage ... she is one of the all-time greats and the Margaret Court Arena celebrates Margaret Court the tennis player," he told 3AW on Friday.

"She's one of the greatest greats of tennis and that's why the arena is named after her."

Victorian Sport Minister John Eren has criticised Ms Court's Qantas boycott.

"Margaret Court's achievements in tennis are not in dispute," he said.

"She is entitled to her views, but boycotts are not helpful for anybody. Victoria prides itself on its equality and being an inclusive, welcoming place for all people. And that is not going to change."

The campaign for the removal of Court's name comes exactly 15 years after the name was installed following a push led by another tennis legend, Billie Jean King.

King, who won 39 open titles, is a prominent a gay rights campaigner and has been out as a lesbian since 1981.

"She won more majors than any other woman or man, and she won the grand slam," King said in 2001.

"I know Rod (Laver) won two [grand slams], but I don't think Rocket would get his knickers in a twist about Margaret sharing with him."
