McCarthy Durie Lawyers
Since 1978
When John McCarthy established his law firm in 1978, he had helping others in mind.
With humble beginnings as a single solicitor firm, the Redland-based business worked in everything from commercial to criminal law.
Sharing an administration staff member with a local architect, Mr McCarthy got the business off the ground, establishing a strong reputation for excellence in service.
With the reputation came growth; the ability to take on more staff and a new partner, Bruce Durie, over the next 15 or so years.
Now the firm, based in four locations - Brisbane, Cleveland, Capalaba and Arana Hills - has a team of more than 60 staff in roles from solicitors, conveyancing, support and administration staff, law graduates, an accounting team and senior management.

The key to McCarthy Durie’s growth now and into the future remains focused on the reason it was established – continuing to help others by providing highly specialised legal advice and support, and the best in client service.
In today’s market clients expect firms to deliver highly specialised expertise, according to CEO Shane McCarthy.
Acknowledging this, the firm has implemented a strategy to meet those demands as well as enable its growth.
“We have seen big changes in the way clients want to communicate with us and they also want to see value demonstrated to them,” Mr McCarthy said.
Clients no longer want solicitors who specialise in an area of law and apply their skills to client needs.
“They want us to have more knowledge of the areas in which they operate,” Mr McCarthy said.
“So that means if they are in the transport industry we need understand the transport industry; if they are in the import-export game, we need to know how it works.”
Part and parcel of ensuring client’s expectations are being met comes down to customer service, an area in which McCarthy Durie excels.
“Every month we take a customer service workshop,” Mr McCarthy said.
“We want to be able to communicate with our clients better and understand their perspective about why they are coming to us and what is driving them.”
The move has paid off with McCarthy Durie Lawyers outstripping the professional market in client feedback.
