A DISPLAY of more than 800 historic photographs of the seaside and Amity district on North Stradbroke Island has opened.
Organised by Kevin Weule, the display features photos of island life, including ferry services, fishing, transport, logging and beach netting dating back to the 1800s.
The Amity Club Historical Photography Display room is open daily at the Amity Point Community Club on Claytons Road.
“I feel that the history of Amity Point is so important and should be archived and recorded,” Mr Weule said.
“I went to the Amity Point Community Club and asked if I could change a spare room into a historical photographic display and record the Amity history.”
Mr Weule said he had received a small grant from the Wishart Rotary Club in Brisbane to get the project up and running.
“With the help of Greg Unsworth, Michael Duignan and the Amity Point Community Club we have now completed the room with over 800 A4 and A3 photos, videos and three televisions,” he said.
Mr Weule has be going to Amity since 1971 and is a former Amity Point Community Club president.
He said the room was open daily.
“Thanks to the people of Amity Point for your support, photos and history,” he said. “This project is supported by the North Stradbroke Island Historical Museum.”
Cleveland MP Mark Robinson congratulated club members involved in the project.
“I also wish to acknowledge the foresight and commitment of past president Kevin Weule and the committee for driving the display.
“...The photographic display of life over the years at Amity Point is a visual story that showcases the natural beauty of the area, the fishing and netting activities that have occurred from one generation to the next, and the local residents who have contributed so much to everyday life.
“The celebration was even more significant in that 100-year-old Nareeba Moopi Moopi Pa resident, Beryl Moore was in attendance and was happy to share her memories.”
