PROSTATE cancer survivors have called on men to think of their loved ones and get tested regularly for prostate cancer.
Tony Bloor said it was selfish of men not to get tested.
“I went and got checked, but if I hadn’t I wouldn’t be here and enjoying life,” he said.
Ray Ward said many men thought they were invincible.
“I just want to encourage men to go and get tested,” he said. “Don’t be scared of going to the doctor and asking to be checked.”
Cancer Council Queensland chief executive Chris McMillan said prostate cancer was one of the most common cancers diagnosed in Queensland, accounting for nearly one third of all male cancers.
She said in the Brisbane area, about 1500 men would be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year.
The Redlands Cancer Council committee will hold a Christmas in July event for women and men to learn about prostate cancer.
Cancer Council Queensland senior research assistant Leah Zajdlewicz will be guest speaker.
Ms Zajdlewicz is involved in a number of studies of men with prostate cancer, their partners and families that focus on reducing the impact of the disease.
The fundraiser will be held on Wednesday, July 12 from 9.30am to noon at Wellington Point hall in Birkdale Road.
There will be music by Allen McMonagle, raffles and a lucky ticket prize.
Tickets are $20 and must be prepaid. To book, phone Heather on 3286 1803 or Tish on 0407 587 096.
