Redlands United has secured three points against Northern Fury with a 2-1 victory on Saturday night in Mackay.
A late penalty to Alex Warrilow sealed Redlands’ third win of the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland season.
The victory comes after two consecutive losses with a 6-0 defeat to Brisbane Olympic FC and a 5-0 to Western Pride FC.
Fury was looking to jump into seventh with a win over an 11th placed Redlands United who was just two points shy of Sunshine Coast FC Fire on the bottom of the table.
Last time the two sides met, the game ended in dramatic style with Northern Fury midfielder Reece Edmonds scoring in the last minutes of the game to give his side a 4-3 win.
In that game, Redlands came from behind to level the match 3-3 and looked set to steal a point but defending blunder at the back gifted Fury the points.
Despite not having the season technical director Matt Chandler had planned, the young team has stepped up when they needed and this game was no exception.
The game on Saturday was played at the new home of the Mackay and Whitsundays Magpies Crusaders United, who will be joining the PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland in 2018.
Fury had the better of the chances in the opening half, but neither side was able to break the deadlock before halftime.
The second half saw both teams have opportunities to break the deadlock but it was youngest, Luke Hendrix who scored the opening goal after the hour mark.
However, it did not take long for Fury to fire back through Kryen Walters. He was able to receive the ball from a Jake Perry cross to put it in the net.
It looked as though Fury had stolen a point against the visitors only for Perry to gift Redlands the opportunity to seal the three points with a penalty moments before injury time.
The win comes after a hard few weeks at the Cleveland Showgrounds with the departure of three players and the appointment of Nick Dibbs as the new senior head coach.
Redlands is yet to reach the heights of their last season successes. They bowed out of the Westfield FFA Cup to Olympic FC in the sixth round and have only managed three wins throughout the season.
The victory against Fury will give the team a much-needed morale boost before heading into their remaining games for the season.
Redlands United will once again be on road as they make the short trip down to Palm Beach to take on table-topper Gold Coast City on Saturday 8 July from 6:30pm.
