Queensland state school students will get an extra day of holidays next year after the Commonwealth Games.
Education and Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones said Queensland's state schools would start Term 2, 2018 on Tuesday, April 17 instead of the day earlier, to allow school buses used during the Games to return to regional areas.
But while students will get the day off, it will not be a public holiday.
The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games will be held from April 4 to 15, 2018.
Ms Jones said the later start date followed advice from the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
"TMR has advised many of the state's school buses will be in use at the Games' closing event on Sunday, April 15, and will be unable to return to regional centres in time for the start of school on Monday as originally scheduled," she said.
"Many of our school buses will be used to transport spectators, event staff, athletes and media representatives during the Games."
As every Games ticket will include free public transport, more than 700 buses will be required during the 11-day event.
Ms Jones said the date change would also allow teachers to access an extra day of professional development, with Monday, April 16 allocated as a flexible professional development day.
She said the decision to delay the start of Term 2 followed discussions with P&Cs Queensland, relevant unions and principals' associations.
"I wanted to relay this message to parents now, well before the beginning of Term 2 in 2018, so they have a long period to plan for this date change," Ms Jones said.
Opposition Education spokeswoman Tracy Davis said children would miss out on a day of learning and parents would either have to take leave or be faced with extra childcare costs.
Brisbane residents scored an extra public holiday in 2014 during the G20 to clear the inner-city due to the disruption and lock down expected.
