The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service has started hazard reduction burns on Moreton and Teerk Roo Ra National Parks.
The Moreton burns include protection zones behind the townships of Cowan Cowan and Bulwer, behind Tangalooma Island Resort and along Middle Road, the island’s main road and a strategic east-west connection.
Larger conservation burns through the northern sections of the island are planned to follow once protection zones are finalised.
Burning was planned to start from today and continue until the end of September, weather permitting.
Smoke may be seen from the middle part of the island, north to the Bulwer and Comboyuro Point area.
Burns will help reduce the intensity of any wildfires and help provide protection for residents and businesses.
Rangers said drivers should not enter roads or tracks that were closed.
People with respiratory or other health problems should take suitable precautions.

Rangers also are burning on Teerk Roo Ra (Peel Island), with smoke drifting across Moreton Bay area.
”Vessel operators are advised that smoke may hang low over the waters surrounding the island,” said rangers.
