BUILT in 1942 to save children travelling to Brisbane for their secondary education, Wynnum State High School celebrates its 75th anniversary on Saturday.
Children from the Redlands were among those who attended, with grade 9 students or sub-juniors in the first intake of students in that year.
A former student, who asked not to be named, said the school building was a beautiful, majestic two-storied brick building with classrooms that had folding doors to be opened up for assembly.
“Trenches for air raid shelter were up on the bank, “ she said.
“On the oval of the park was a search light manned by soldiers living under the grandstand. This was out of bounds.
The former student, who lived at Birkdale when she started at the school, said there was no official uniform because of wartime rationing.
“Girls had a navy tunic and white blouse, while boys wore grey shorts and a white shirt.
“I always remember Miss Lindholt who started reading Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book to us in sub-junior.
“I was always waiting for the next lesson for her to continue the story. I loved reading, but books were scarce,” she said.
Gates open for the anniversary celebration at 9.30am.
There will be memorabilia on display, band and musical performances, a barbecue and school tours.
