A late goal to defender Michael Ryan has seen Redlands United snatch the three points against Far North Queensland (FNQ) Heat in a 2-1 win on Saturday night at the Cleveland Showgrounds.
It was a physical and heated match between the two sides, which resulted in the sending off of Heat defender Charlie Beverley after the full-time whistle.
Redlands coach Nick Dibbs said he was over the moon with his team’s performance.
“Back to back wins is really good, really important for us and a win at home is always fantastic,” he said.
“We’ve had some changes off the field during the week and the boy’s reaction today was absolutely first class.
“I am really pleased and it is what they deserve.”
Redlands came out firing as they had a number of crucial chances in front of goal and Heat became frustrated with Redlands control of the game.
However, it was Redlands who conceded early after Heat’s Jamie Carroll slotted the ball into the back of the net after his previous two attempts were saved.
It did not take long for Redlands to fight their way back into the contest as Carlton Westerdale headed the ball home at the back post.
The second half became more physical with both sides trying to play the players instead of the ball.
“Football has its moments where a little bit bitey and niggly but it goes for two sides,” Dibbs said.
“The boys reacted well and sometimes you use it to your advantage and sometimes it can work against you,” he said.
Heat looked likely to take the lead with a number of clear chances on goal late in the second half but they could not capitalise on their chances.
Graham Fyfe was once again instrumental in the win after another one of his free kicks assisted in goal when he found the head of Michael Ryan at the back post.
During the week Redlands signed three players to their PlayStation 4 NPL Queensland squad. The club welcomed back Russell Woodruffe who was a part of Redlands grand final win last season.
New signings Reuben Douglas and Lloyd Harrington were both involved in Saturday night’s win against Heat.
“It was Llyod’s second game in the middle of the back four and he’s a commanding presence there,” Dibbs said.
“Reuben really did affect the game today, he is something different for us and he’s very aggressive to score.
“I’m really excited about what we are going to do with him next year,” he said.
Redlands United are off to Perry Park next Saturday night as they face the Brisbane Strikers from 6pm.
