A late goal to Carlton Westerdale gave Redlands United the three points in a 2-1 win against Brisbane City on Friday night.
It was a must win game for Brisbane City if they wanted to stay in touch with the top four.
Redalnds coach Nick Dibbs said he was over the moon with his side’s result.
“We are in a good place and I was really confident going into it,” Dibbs said.
“As I said last week, every game we are going to cause upsets and, to be honest, at the end of the day the motivation was to stop City getting into the final four,” he said. “It is our job to go and win as many games as possible and the boys did everything we asked.”
Redlands dominated the opening half and were rewarded for their efforts as Adam Chandler played a ball into the box and Graham Fyfe’s shot hit the inside of the post to find the net.
Redlands continued to dominate the remainder of the half but was unable to find a second goal.
Dibbs was forced to make a substitution at half-time as Jake Sherwood succumbed to a rib injury sustained in the first half. Redlands started the second half the way they finished the first and continued to cause problems for City’s goalkeeper, Bon Scott, as he had some shaky moments in goal.
Brisbane City fought their way back into the match, and after a number of strong chances on goal the ball was whipped into the back post for Fiechtner to head the ball home.
“In a game of football, every team is going to have their 20 minutes and it does not matter who you play,” Dibbs said.
“Everyone is going to have their moment and you are going to have to deal with that.
“Obviously, they did get the goal which was a little bit disappointing to concede and if you look back we could have been in a more comfortable position at that stage of the game,” he said.
Redlands continued to dig in as Alex Warrilow broke free down the left side of the field and into the box, his cross finding Westerdale who scored the winning goal.
