REVEREND Allan Goodwin has been inducted as the new president of the Rotary Club of Redland Sunrise.
Mr Goodwin received the collar of office from Janet Butler at the induction at the Carriage Room at Thornlands.
A spokesperson for the club said the ceremony was an opportunity to reflect on the club’s achievements during the previous year and acknowledge several Redlanders for their tremendous contribution to the community.
Recognition
Don Baxter was named a Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of his volunteer work at Calisto Park Equestrian Centre over the past five years.
“Don has been instrumental in ensuring that a wonderful experience is provided for people with disabilities to enjoy their horse-riding lessons, enriching their lives and engaging them in beneficial physical activity,” the spokesperson said.
Dave Waller received the Marian Munro Memorial Pride in Workmanship Award in recognition of his commitment to and involvement in sailing training.
The spokesperson said Mr Waller had learned to sail at the Coochiemudlo Island Sailing School many years ago.
“He went on to train more than 3000 students in trimming and balancing sailing vessels,” the spokesperson said.
Past president Eddie Richards was recognised with the club’s Pat Smith Dedication Trophy for the Rotarian of the Year for his efforts in co-ordinating the club’s fundraising barbecues.
“The filling of rosters with enough helpers can be very challenging and Eddie has managed this task exceptionally well,” the spokesperson said.
Past president and secretary Rosemary Skelly was awarded the Rotary International Avenues of Service Citation for an Individual Rotarian.
The award was in recognition of her participation in service activities.
After the changeover ceremony, past president Janet Butler was presented with a Paul Harris Sapphire Pin in recognition of her year as club president.
The Rotary District 9630 also recognised her with the district’s Literacy Award for 2016-17.
“This award is for the best Literacy Project in the district by an individual or club for the year,” the spokesperson said.
“Janet’s project was Braille Books for Kids in the Bush, providing vision-impaired children with appropriate reading books which had been fully brailled by Vision Australia.”
The Rotary Club of Redland Sunrise meets at Thornlands Dance Palais on Wednesdays (except the fourth Wednesday of each month) from 7am.
