Burmese Daze: Land of Mystery and Intrigue is an exhibition of artwork by Rod Brownsey following his 2016 visit to Myanmar. He was overwhelmed by the experience and has “tried to produce, in my own way, artwork which is reflective of this wonderful personal experience”.
Visitors to his exhibition may be as moved as Rod was with the wonder of Myanmar. He travels a lot since retiring six years ago and tries to record what he sees as it happens – through photographs, sketches or by purchasing items that interest him.
Rod has already visited Sri Lanka, Cambodia, China, India and Vietnam, but in Myanmar he was able to catch glimpses of activities long lost in other countries. He also recorded aspects of culture unique to Myanmar – like the horse and ox carts which are still used for agriculture and transport.
It is a devout Buddhist nation and people, including Buddhist monks, carry beautiful parasols to ward off the harsh sun. Rod has depicted many parasols in his artworks – and was particularly interested in drawing the lotus flower, which is sacred to Buddhists.
For this exhibition, Rod selected more than 40 original ink drawings covering a range of images reflecting many aspects of Myanmar life. Each work is professionally framed and is for sale. His work is on exhibition now until 24th September.
