PENSIONER Dorothy Smith of Victoria Point wants council to subsidise mowing for pensioners who are not fit to undertake the task.
Ms Smith said her husband Les had a bad back and was no longer up to the job.
It would be of great benefit to her and other Redland pensioners if such a service was offered and might be one way money saved from Donald Simpson Centre funding cutbacks could be more widely distributed.
Ms Smith said Logan City Council gave out $20 vouchers to subisidise mowing and she could not see why Redlands could not adopt a similar system for those with a disability.
“We have a friend who comes down from Prescare and helps Les but he’s got a bad back too.
“I feel we shouldn’t have to do that. We shouldn’t be using people.”
Ms Smith said she many other people were in the same situation.
She had had the lawn mowed through federal government assistance for the aged but needed an ongoing service.
She did not expect council to pay the full cost of mowing but a subsidy would make all the difference.
“If we could get vouchers and we’d pay the rest, I’d be happy with that,” she said.
“Somebody said to me you never get anything out of council but I don’t know if that’s true or not.”
A Logan City Council spokeswoman said the authority did not provide subsidised mowing vouchers or mowing services for seniors.
A Redland City Council spokesperson said pensioners seeking home support assistance from council for services like garden maintenance and lawn mowing were referred to the Commonwealth Home Support Program.
