Most Australian fans would be familiar with Scottish striker Ross McCormack for his central role in what is dubbed "gate-gate" earlier this year.
The Aston Villa frontman failed to turn up for training, claiming he could not get his car out of his driveway because the electronic gates at his house had failed - an excuse that didn't cut much ice with Villa boss Steve Bruce, who slammed him for not jumping over a 1.5 metre fence and finding another way to get to training.
But will McCormack be the man to prove the gateway to goals for Melbourne City?
The A-League club won't confirm anything officially, but Villa and the UK press are widely reporting that the former Leeds United and Fulham man is on his way out of Villa Park and headed for Bundoora in a deal to solve City's frontline problems.
McCormack is a talented player, no doubt. Fulham paid ??11 million ($18.6 million) to bring him from Leeds to London, but he failed to fire for the Cottagers after doing well at Elland Road.
The Londoners offloaded him to Villa for ??12 million, but it was his attitude, rather than his ability, that saw him drift to the outer at the midlands club.
He has been out of favour since the training incident and Villa have been keen to offload him if they can.
Bruce told the Birmingham Mail that despite some nibbles during the off-season and through the transfer window period, no one had come in with a serious offer to sign McCormack, hence the club's preparedness to let him head Down Under in a loan deal.
Melbourne City, in their habitual form, is neither confirming nor denying anything until the player has agreed to terms and passed a medical.
But with Bruno Fornaroli on the easy list until at least the New Year, and possibly longer, City definitely need to do something to boost their firepower.
Tim Cahill's aerial prowess remains unmatched in this league, but he can't run out 90 minutes on a regular basis these days.
City have attacking midfielders whom they hope will chip in with goals, but coach Warren Joyce needs a striker who will hit the target regularly.
If Scottish international McCormack comes to the A-League and performs as he did for Leeds, he should make a huge impression.
But if his mind is not firmly focussed on the job he will struggle. It may not be the best league in the world, but experience has shown, particularly with foreign imports, that if they underestimate the strength of the league they don't shine. McCormack needs to have the sort of commitment Bruce doubted he possessed when he failed to front for training.
