Emily Smith scores five goals in captaincy debut

Emily Smith has netted five goals in her Hockeyroos captaincy debut as Australia thrashed minnows Papua New Guinea 23-0 in Sydney on Thursday.

Crookwell export Smith was the star, while Kathryn Slattery blasted a first-half hat-trick on her way to four for the match.

The win secured the Hockeyroos a place in the Oceania Cup final on Sunday, but they'll meet New Zealand on Saturday.

There were 10 goal scorers in the victory with Renee Taylor opening the Hockeyroos' account with her first international goal, before completing a hat-trick.

Grace Stewart also netted a trio, while Gabi Nance and Maddy Fitzpatrick both hit doubles.

Brooke Peris, Kaitlin Nobbs, Kristina Bates and Kate Hanna were also got on the scoresheet.

The Kookaburras booked their place in the final with a 5-1 triumph over rivals New Zealand as Jeremy Hayward fired Australia to victory with two goals from penalty corners.
