Heavy rain over the weekend has fired up a lot of smallish mulloway. The main location was the Brisbane River but they were also caught from Jumpinpin and the Broadwater.
It is well worth working your favourite spot targeting them this weekend.
The rain has also improved the mud crab catches throughout southern Moreton Bay and Jumpinpin this week.
Whiting numbers continue to improve. The better catches this week were again in the larger bodies of water as ther have been too many small bream and other pickers in rivers and creek if you’re using worms for bait.
We’re seeing an increase in mangrove jack catches, with most so far having come from the northern Broadwater canals, but there’s also been a few caught around the Pin.
Surf beaches are at their best, both North and South Stradbroke islands have turned up fish to four kilograms and not just one or two. There have been good catches reported, especially by those fishing at night.
It’s the same story in northern NSW although the further north you go the less big fish are being caught.
There’s been good catches on Noosa North Shore and Fraser but the quality has not been as good.
In the bay most anglers are chasing mackerel and most of the action has been off the bottom of Moreton Island around the Sand Hills. There’s also been the odd school popping up in the southern Bay and off Peel and Goat Islands. There’s also been a few tuna reported off Bribie this week as well.
No numbers of snapper were reported from the Bay. There’s been just a few 40cm to 45cm fish in the southern bay and off the Redcliffe Peninsula.
On the offshore scene, there’s been plenty of pan size snapper to 50cm caught in 90 to 100 metres of water and tuskfish in the shallows around 30 to 40 metres.
On the freshwater scene, there’s been no numbers of redclaw reported as yet. The rain might see catches improve over the next few weeks. North Pine Dam is still producing record catches on both live shrimp and lures.
